Gabriel Lame

Gabriel Lamé was a French mathematician, physicist, and engineer. From 1820 to 1831 he lived and worked in Saint-Petersburg. His research covered a wide spectrum of mathematical and physical problems, from number theory to the theory of elasticity, from purely theoretical research (such as the proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem for n=7) to concrete applications (e.g. construction of suspension bridges) Gabriel Lamé is one of the 72 scientists who are commemorated on the Eiffel tower.
